House plants are gaining popularity, with good reason. Indoor plants tie natural elements into home decor and bring the beauty of the earth inside the home.

Though houseplants are beautiful, some are toxic and can be harmful to your pets. Stay tuned to learn how you can safeguard your furry friends.

Toxic Plants

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASCPA), ingesting any plant material may cause vomiting and upset stomach in cats and dogs. The following plants, however, are toxic and may cause mild to severe symptoms in little (or big) furballs.

    • Cannabis – one of the most common plant poisonings seen by vets
    • Lilies – including tiger lilies, calla lilies, and Easter lilies
    • Sago Palms – consumption of any part of these plants is likely to prove fatal to pets
    • Philodendron – a family of plants including the popular fiddle-leaf fig
    • Aloe Vera – despite its medicinal uses in humans, these plants are not good for animals
    • Amaryllis – may cause tremors and anorexia in addition to vomiting and diarrhea
    • Birds of Paradise – The flower and seeds of these plants are the most dangerous
    • Azalea – these beautiful flowers are deadly when ingested by pets
    • Mistletoe – harmful to humans and animals alike
    • Poinsettia – mildly toxic

Snake Plants – another popular house plant, the leaves of these can be extremely toxic

The list of toxic indoor plants is extensive, and the above list is not all-inclusive. Before bringing any plants into your home, it’s best to check the plant for toxicity. This can easily be done in a quick online search. If your pet consumes any toxic plant matter, see a vet immediately.

Safe Plants

Although it’s not a good idea for pets to eat any house plants, there are certainly indoor plants that are much safer for animals.

    • Orchids – beautiful, long lasting and safe for pets! Doesn’t get better than the orchid
    • Succulents – these water friendly plants are a great option for homes with pets. In addition to their safety for pets, their small size allows them to be placed on tall shelves and away from little paws.
    • Ponytail Palm – a darling mini palm tree, these plants pose a low risk to pets
    • Sword Fern – though some ferns may be poisonous, the sword fern is generally considered safe to cats and dogs
    • Spider Plants – one of the most widely used house plants, spider plants are safe for pets and easy to care for
