What a Plant Needs

Each plant is unique and will have different needs. However, there are certain needs that will be across the board for plants. For example, you’ve probably heard of photosynthesis. This process occurs when plants harness energy from the sun and convert that energy into their tissues. Because of this, most plants will need a significant amount of direct sunlight. Certain plants will still thrive indoors or in the shade, but generally—plants need sunlight.

Plants also need water. The amount of water a plant will need will differ based on the kind of plant it is. It may also differ based on your environment and weather. Plants often need more water during the heat of summer than they will during the winter or spring. Be sure to research how much water your plant needs—over-watering can be just as dangerous as under-watering.

Optimum temperatures are also a necessity to plants. Certain plants will grow in harsher weather, but other plants cannot grow and thrive during extreme temperatures. Plants are usually more durable once they have grown to a certain size. You’ll need to be more careful if you’re growing seed. Know your environment, know your climate, and know your plants before you get started.

What to Consider

Before you get going on your garden, if you’re a first-time gardener there are a few things you should consider. The location of your garden will greatly impact its needs.

Are you growing plants indoors or outdoors? This will make a big difference in the plants’ needs. If you’re growing an outdoor garden, be sure to test your soil. This will tell you what your plant needs, or potentially what your soil needs before you start planting. Growing outdoor plants will require optimal light, water, nutrients, and good soil. If your soil is not ideal, you can also build raised beds to grow your garden in. If you go with a container, water will be even more essential for your plants’ growth. Containers and raised beds tend to dry out more, whereas the ground will retain moisture for longer.

How much time are you willing to spend in your garden? If you’re new to gardening, you may want to start out small. Plants need regular care—determine how much time you are willing and able to invest in your garden before you get going. Start small and if all goes well, you can also add to and grow your garden.

What kind of garden do you want? Are you hoping for more of a floral garden, vegetable garden, shrubberies, or something else? Each of these gardens will have different needs. If you’re growing plants for food, consider what you want to eat. Do you want fresh zucchinis and carrots from your garden? Be sure that you have plans for the potential food you’ll produce. No need to grow a surplus of tomatoes if you don’t like them!
